HL Deb 08 November 1949 vol 165 c317

2.36 p.m.

LORD HINDLIP

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government whether they will state their intentions as regards the reform of local government after the passing of the Local Government Boundary Commission (Dissolution) Bill.]

LORD SHEPHERD

My Lords, the Government's intentions in this matter were stated by the Minister of Health in another place in the debate on the Local Government Boundary Commission (Dissolution) Bill, which will shortly conic before your Lordships' House. The Government are reviewing the structure and functions of local government, but are not yet in a position to announce proposals. There is, I am afraid, no prospect of legislation in the present Parliament.

LORD HINDLIP

I thank the noble Lord for his reply.
