HL Deb 27 July 1949 vol 164 cc565-6

3.4 p.m.

LORD DOWDING

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government what progress has been made to implement their undertaking that the slaughter of cattle by the Jewish method shall be prohibited except when a casting-pen of approved type is used.]

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES (THE EARL OF HUNTINGDON)

My Lords, your Lordships will realise that considerable progress has already been made to implement the Government's undertaking in this matter, but some time must necessarily elapse before arrangements can be made to supply all the Jewish community with Kosher beef derived only from cattle which have been slaughtered in an approved casting-pen. It is considered that January 1 next would be the earliest practicable date from which to apply a general prohibition, and as from that date no Kosher beef will be supplied unless an approved casting-pen has been used.

LORD DOWDING

My Lords, I thank the noble Earl for his statement. If I may be allowed to do so, I should also like to thank the noble Lord, Lord Lucas, for the personal attention which he has given to this question which lies so close to my heart.
