HL Deb 27 July 1949 vol 164 c568

3.9 p.m.

LORD VANSITTART

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask what powers His Majesty's Government possess to deport imported subversionists and hostile agents.]

THE LORD CHANCELLOR (VISCOUNT JOWITT)

My Lords, the Home Secretary has power under the Aliens' Order to make a deportation order against an alien if he deems it to be advisable and to the public good to do so. His Majesty's Government are considering whether it would be desirable to take power to deport British subjects, and the Home Secretary hopes to be in a position to make a statement in this matter in another place to-morrow.

LORD VANSITTART

My Lords, I thank the noble and learned Viscount for his answer, and will await that statement before carrying the matter further.
