HL Deb 18 July 1949 vol 164 cc1-2

Order of the Day for the Second Reading read.

LORD SHEPHERD

My Lords, there is just one small point in this Bill to which I should draw your attention. The pier mentioned in the Bill is of a different character from the one in the Bill to which your Lordships have just given a Second Reading. This pier is intended for amusement and health purposes generally. There has recently been a transfer of the property involved from one company to another, and in the new Order there is a provision, to enable the new company to provide for passenger-carrying vehicles on the pier. The Southwold Corporation objected to this clause and wanted to prevent the use of passenger-carrying vehicles for amusement only. After listening to the arguments on both sides, the Minister came to the conclusion that it was a case in which he should not intervene. And as he has not amended Clause 7 of the Bill he has left it open to the Corporation, if they are so disposed, to proceed by means of Select Committee. That has not been done up to the moment. I beg to move that the Bill be now read a second time.

Moved, That the Bill be now read 2a.—(Lord Shepherd.)

On Question, Bill read 2a, and committed.
