Order of the Day read for the consideration of the Fourth Report from the Select Committee.

The Committee reported as follows:

1.—PORTRAIT OF VISCOUNT ULLSWATER

The Committee considered a letter from the Speaker to the Lord Chancellor suggesting that room might be found in the precincts of the House of Lords for a portrait of the first Viscount Ullswater which had been offered on loan to the House of Commons. The Committee decided, albeit with great respect to the memory of so eminent a parliamentary figure, that they could not recommend the acceptance of this suggestion.

2.—APPOINTMENT OF A CLERK IN THE PARLIAMENT OFFICE

The Clerk of the Parliaments informed the Committee of the appointment of Mr. Rohan Nicholas Wadham as a clerk on the staff of the Parliament Office. The appointment to date from 13th June, 1949.

3.—HOUSEMAIDS AND PORTERS

The Committee authorised the appointment of two extra housemaids for the cleaning of additional rooms.

The Committee also sanctioned an increase in the weekly wages for porters and housemaids.

4.—GIFT TO CAEN UNIVERSITY

The Clerk of the Parliaments informed the Committee that he had received the following letter from the Rector of Caen University:

Monsieur,

J'ai l'honneur de vous faire connaître quo les sept magnifiques volumes offerts par la Chambre des Lords à notre Bibliothèque Universitaire out maintenant pris place dans sa Salle d'Honneur.

Je vous saurais la plus grande reconnaissance si vous vouliez bien exprimer à leurs Seigneureries la gratitude de l'Université de Caen. Venant après de nombreux exemples de l'affectueux intérê quo porte le peuple britannique à la Nation amie, l'envoi généreux de la Chambre Haute du Parlement Anglois apporte un digne couronnement à une lisle déjà fort longue.

Grâce à cette genérosité, la Bibliothèque de l'Université de Caen vu s'enorgueillir de posséder sur ses rayons des documents précieux dont la rareté sera, croyez le, bien dûement appréciée. Aprés cinq ans d'efforts de reconstitution, elle commence à ofirir ànouveau aux maîtres et aux chercheurs comme aux Etudiants de Caen une collection d'ouvrages dont elle est n'en de dire de certains d'entre eux qu'elle n'en possédait aucun exemplaire avant la destruction qui l'a frappée.

C'est donc au nom de l'Université de Caen tout entière autant qu'à mon nom propre, quo je vous prie d'offrir à leur Seigneureries le témoignage de respectueux remerciements qu'elle leur adresse.

Veuillez agrée, Monsieur, je vous prie, l'hommage de ma très haute consideration.

5—LIBRARY SUB-COMMITTEE

The Lord Badeley was appointed a member of the Library Sub-Committee.

6.—SUB-COMMITTEE ON THE REFRESHMENT DEPARTMENT

The Lord Badeley was appointed a member of the Sub-Committee on the Refreshment Department.
