HL Deb 06 July 1949 vol 163 cc921-2

2.37 p.m.

THE LORD BISHOP OF CHICHESTER

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question which stands in my name on the Order Paper.

[The Question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government whether the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland have had any responsibility for the proceedings for the trial of German war criminals at Nuremberg subsequent to the conclusion in October, 1946, of the International Military Tribunal for the trial of German major war criminals; and whether the statement contained in an article published by the New York Herald Tribune on May 23, 1949, that "the Nuremberg trials were conducted by Great Britain and U.S.A." is correct.]

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (LORD HENDERSON)

My Lords, His Majesty's Government have always approved of the policy that Germans alleged to have committed war crimes should be brought to trial. His Majesty's Government have, however, had no responsibility whatsoever for the trials which have been taking place at Nuremberg since the conclusion in October, 1946, of the International Military Tribunal which tried the German major war criminals.

THE LORD BISHOP OF CHICHESTER

I thank the noble Lord for his answer.
