HL Deb 15 December 1949 vol 165 cc1617-32

4.13 p.m.

Returned from the Commons with one of the Amendments made by the Lords disagreed to, for which disagreement they assigned a Reason, and several other Amendments disagreed to but Amendments proposed in lieu thereof.

THE LORD PRIVY SEAL (VISCOUNT ADDISON)

My Lords, I beg to move that the Commons Amendments be now considered. On this Motion it may be convenient if I make a statement. It will be within the recollection of the House that arising out of an Amendment moved by the noble and learned Viscount, Lord Simon, relating to the Fountain in Parliament Square, we agreed to a certain proposal by which your Lordships' House and another place would require to pass a Resolution approving the proposal to be submitted to them. There has been some misunderstanding, I am afraid, about this matter, and alternative Amendments are now before us from the other place. When we come to them I think it will be possible to submit suggestions to your Lordships—at least I hope so— which will meet with general approval. That course will represent what I am sure we should all agree is desired—a strict adherence to the understanding arrived at previously on the matter.

Moved, That the Commons Amendments be now considered.—(Viscount Addison.)
