Order of the Day read for the consideration of the Fourth Report from the Select Committee.

The Committee reported as follows:

1.—RFTIREMENT OF MAJOR-GENERAL N. M. WILSON AND RE-ORGANISATION IN DEPARTMENT OF THE LORD GREAT CHAMBERLAIN. The Committee learned with regret of the resignation through ill-health of Major-General Nigel Maitland Wilson, C.B., D.S.O., O.B.E., from the office of Secretary to the Lord Great Chamberlain. The Committee expressed their appreciation of his services, and sanctioned the payment to him of a gratuity and an additional allowance under the Superannuation Acts, 1859, 1909 and 1935. The Committee were informed that the Lord Great Chamberlain had appointed Admiral Sir Guy Royle, K.C.B., C.M.G., Yeoman Usher of the Black Rod, to be. Secretary to the Lord Great Chamberlain from 1st July, 1948. The Committee sanctioned the additional salary payable to him as Secretary to the Lord Great Chamberlain. The Committee were also informed of the appointment of Mr. H. J. Martin, M.B.E., Superintendent of Custodians, as Staff Superintendent to supervise the whole staff in the Department of the Lord Great Chamberlain. The Committee sanctioned the payment to him of an allowance in connection with his additional duties, and also sanctioned an extra weekly payment to the Senior Custodian Inspector, Mr. G. Woodcock. The Committee were informed of the abolition of the post of Resident Housekeeper on the retirement of Miss Catherine Bell from 1st October, 1948. The Committee expressed their appreciation of her services extending over 19 years, and sanctioned the payment to her of a compassionate gratuity under section 4 of the Superannuation Act, 1887. The Committee also sanctioned an additional weekly payment to the Head Housemaid from 1st October, 1948.

2.—HISTORICAL RECORDS. The Clerk of the Parliaments informed the Committee of the Report made by the experts regarding the condition and their recommendations for the preservation of the documents in the Victoria Tower. The Committee desired the Clerk of the Parliaments to convey to the members of the subcommittee an expression of their warm appreciation of their services. The Committee approved the appointment of an additional Office Assistant and a Porter, whose duties will include assistance in the removal and sterilisation of the documents.

3.—WAR MEMORIAL. The Clerk of the Parliaments reported progress on the Lords War Memorial. The Committee sanctioned the employment of extra clerical assistance.

4.—REFRESHMENT DEPARTMENT. The Clerk of the Parliaments laid before the Committee the Report of the Sub-Committee on the Refreshment Department.

5.—RETIREMENT OF CUSTODIAN. The Committee sanctioned a pension and an additional allowance under the Superannuation Act, 1935, to Custodian William George Jenkins, on his retirement from 2nd August, 1948.
