HL Deb 17 February 1948 vol 153 c1077
Lord LLEWELLIN

My Lords, I beg leave to ask the question standing in my name on the Order Paper.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government how many convictions there have been in England and Wales for attempted rape as contrasted with convictions for rape in the years from 1938 to 1947 respectively.]

The Lord CHANCELLOR

My Lords, separate figures for offences of attempted rape dealt with by the courts are not available, as the figures are compiled upon returns which do not distinguish between rape and attempted rape. The number of persons convicted and sentenced for rape or attempted rape during the years 1938 to 1946 is as follows: 1938, forty; 1939, thirty-six; 1940, thirty-two; 1941, thirty-six; 1942, fifty; 1943, sixty-four; 1944, seventy-seven; 1945, 100; 1946, sixty-five.
