HL Deb 21 April 1948 vol 155 c244
LORD BARNBY

My Lords, I beg leave to ask His Majesty's Government the question standing in my name on the Order Paper.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government, whether, in view of the unilateral action of the French Government in devaluing, in contravention of the agreement undertaken by signatories of the Bretton Woods Agreement, of which it is understood France was one, they can state if it is to be understood that the Foreign Assistance Act recently passed by the United States Congress contains any provisions direct or implied which would exclude similar unilateral action in devaluation by the British Government.]

THE LORD PRIVY SEAL (VISCOUNT ADDISON)

My Lords, the answer to the noble Lord's question is in the negative.
