HL Deb 13 May 1947 vol 147 cc657-8

2.42 p.m.

LORD HAILEY

My Lords, I beg to ask the question standing in my name.

[The question was as follows:

In view of the statement made in the White Paper of April 30 last, that the Government of India accept liability for pensions earned by service under the Secretary of State, will the Government now state the methods by which they propose to ensure the payment of these pensions after June, 1948?]

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA AND BURMA (THE EARL OF LISTOWEL)

My Lords, it is intended to negotiate agreements in regard to matters arising out of the transfer of power in India with the representatives of those to whom it is decided that power shall be transferred. One of the questions to be dealt with in these negotiations will be the method of assuring the payment of Service pensions.
