Notes:

  1. (1) The figures for encashments of Savings Certificates represent principal only. Accumulated interest on the holdings repaid amounted to £6 million in the April-June quarter, £5 million in the July-September quarter, and £6 million in the October-December quarter.
  2. (2) The figures for the Post Office Savings Bank exclude Services Release Benefits Accounts.
  3. (3) The figures for Defence Bonds encashments exclude £8.3 million repaid on maturity in the October-December quarter.
  4. (4) As regards Savings Certificates the figures of accrued interest represent the increase in each quarter in the estimated amount of the interest due on Savings Certificates remaining invested. As regards the Post Office and Trustee Savings Banks, the figures represent the estimated interest due on the outstanding balances at the end of each month, interest on the balances in Services Release Benefits Accounts being deducted.
