HL Deb 25 March 1947 vol 146 c681
THE MARQUESS OF DONEGALL

My Lords, I beg leave to ask His Majesty's Government the following question of which I have given them private notice: Whether they have any statement to make regarding the executions of the West African natives, Aaron Eugene Dankwa, Kwasi Pippin, Kwame Kugwa?

THE LORD CHANCELLOR (LORD JOWITT)

My Lords, as announced from the Colonial Office last night, three men under sentence of death for murder were executed in Accra yesterday. The executions of two others were postponed by the Governor on receipt of notice of intention to lodge a petition with the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

THE MARQUESS OF DONEGALL

My Lords, I would like to thank the noble and learned Viscount for his answer. I owe him an apology because I gave him very short notice, and it is indeed gratifying to me that he was able to answer it at all. I wish to make my position clear. I am not questioning the justice of the verdict; I am merely questioning the procedure and the long time that these things have taken. The noble and learned Viscount's answer will help me to decide whether to put down a Motion and to move for Papers.
