HL Deb 18 March 1947 vol 146 c399
LORD AMMON

My Lords, owing to the large number of your Lordships who have notified your intention to take part in the Economic debate—we already have a list of sixteen speakers for Wednesday, and ten for Thursday—I venture to suggest that the House should meet tomorrow, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. instead of 2.30 p.m. The advance of half an hour in the time of our meeting would, I hope, not inconvenience your Lordships. It would certainly give us that little elbow room which might enable us to rise between 7 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. In these days of restricted transport, i know how difficult it is for all concerned, not only for your Lordships but also for the attendants of the House, if we sit after the dinner hour, and I trust, therefore, that I shall have your Lordships agreement to this slightly earlier meeting to-morrow afternoon—namely 2 o'clock instead of 2.30 p.m.

VISCOUNT SIMON

My Lords, I had not previously heard of this suggestion, but I should think it would commend itself generally to your Lordships; House. Realizing how many of your Lordships hope to take part in the debate on the White Paper, I had already resolved that if I were fortunate enough to speak at all I should announce at the beginning of my speech that the next speaker would begin a quarter of an hour after I started.

LORD AMMON

I hope note will be taken of the noble and learned Viscount's hint.

THE EARL OF PERTH

I entirely agree with the suggestion of the noble Lord.
