My Lords, I beg to ask the question standing in my name.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government whether they can give an assurance that any considerable extension of the working of night-shifts in industry will be accompanied by an improvement in the present arrangements for the policing of public highways during the hours of darkness.]

My Lords, this is a matter which will no doubt be considered by the responsible chief officers of the Police in the light of local conditions and the available resources of manpower.
