HL Deb 17 June 1947 vol 148 cc826-7

2.37 p.m.

LORD BROUGHSHANE

My Lords, I beg to ask the question standing in my name on the Order Paper.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government, whether attention has been called to the unsightliness of the open wire rubbish receptacles in the Royal Parks, their contents being in full view; and whether steps can be taken to have solid-sided receptacles, the contents of which are not visible.]

LORD HENDERSON

My Lords, the small wire litter baskets formerly contained metal linings, but they were worn out during the war, and it has not yet been possible to obtain replacements. My right honourable friend the Minister of Works is looking into the possibility of obtaining some substitute material for the open mesh fencing at present used for the large receptables.

LORD BROUGHSHANE

Would my noble friend or the Minster take occasion some time to view the very unsightly appearance of some of these receptacles, which. being raised above the ground, are in full view for many yards? The repulsive contents are visible for considerable distances to the public, and surely some kind of lining that would not be at all expensive could be placed round the rubbish.

LORD HENDERSON

I will pass on that suggestion to my right honourable friend.
