HL Deb 16 July 1947 vol 150 c801
VISCOUNT LONG

My Lords, I beg to ask the question standing in my name on the order paper.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government, whether it is a fact as reported in the National Press that a foreign brigade is being raised outside the frontiers of Greece, and further, whether His Majesty's Government have any confirmation of the fact that it is to be used against Greece.]

THE LORD CHANCELLOR.(VISCOUNT JOWITT)

My Lords, I have been asked to reply. There have been various reports, which your Lordships have seen, that a foreign brigade is being raised outside Greece for service with the Greek bandits. His Majesty's Government are not, however, in a position either to confirm or to deny these reports.

VISCOUNT LONG

In thanking the noble and learned Viscount on the Woolsack may I ask, in view of the grave menace of this guerilla warfare, supported by the countries outside Greece, as it is at the moment, would His Majesty's Government take every step, with the co-operation of the United States of America, to grant the request of the Greek Government to increase their forces adequately to deal with it, and especially at this moment to let them have all the equipment that we can?

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

I cannot say more than this, that His Majesty's Government are obviously aware of the gravity of the situation.
