HL Deb 07 July 1947 vol 150 c2

Order of the Day for the Second Reading read.

LORD WALKDEN

My Lords, I beg to move that this Bill be read a second time.

Moved, That the Bill be now read 2a. —[Lord Walkden.]

THE EARL OF MUNSTER

My Lords, may I just say one word on this? I understand this Bill is introduced for the purpose of confirming marriages which have taken place in churches, chapels or some other building which had not got a licence for the performance of marriages. I do not want to ask the noble Lord any questions on this occasion, but I would ask him to look into this question at some future stage, to see whether the Home Office have undertaken the obligations which they accepted a year or so before the war, whereby every church which could not celebrate marriages had to have a notice in the church to that effect.

LORD WALKDEN

I will gladly obtain the information desired by the noble Earl. As I understand it, this Bill is to rectify nine cases which have been found to be irregular. They are good marriages from the human point of view, but this Bill will rectify a slight legal flaw.

On Question, Bill read 2a, and committed.
