HL Deb 18 December 1947 vol 153 cc354-5
LORD ROCHDALE

My Lords, I beg to ask the question standing in my name on the Order Paper.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government whether they will state the monthly value of imports from the United States of America of internal combustion motors for agricultural tractors being manufactured in the United Kingdom.]

The JOINT PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY of AGRICULTURE and FISHERIES (The Earl of Huntingdon)

My Lords, I regret that particulars of the values of these imports are not separately recorded. Import licences have been issued in respect of about 4,000,000 dollars worth of American engines. These were required to allow two tractor-manufacturing projects to start in this country sooner than would otherwise have been possible. In one case production of suitable British engines has now begun on a considerable scale; in the other case, where a much smaller number are needed, arrangements are in hand for manufacture in this country at a later stage.
