HL Deb 23 April 1947 vol 147 cc121-2

THE EARL OF MANSFIELD asked His Majesty's Government whether they are aware, that on Sunday, April 13, after the 9 p.m. news, a broadcast was made by a subject of the United States of America, by name Wallace, which contained direct criticisms of the present foreign policy of the United States; and if they will represent to the British Broadcasting Corporation that it is both undesirable and improper that official facilities should be given to a foreign national to launch attacks, while on British soil, upon the Government of his own country, particularly when that country is an Ally, and benefactor, of our own.

THE SECRETARY or STATE FOR INDIA AND BURMA (THE EARL OF LISTOWEL)

His Majesty's Government are aware that Mr. Henry Wallace made a broadcast in the B.B.C.'s Home Programme after the 9 p.m. News on April 13. The B.B.C. invited Mr. Wallace, as a distinguished international figure, to give his views as a private citizen about world affairs, and the question of granting Mr. Wallace official facilities did not arise. It has been the policy of successive Governments to afford the B.B.C. independence in the choice of their programmes and the material which they contain. The present Government are continuing that policy and do not propose to intervene.
