HL Deb 15 April 1947 vol 146 c1014

2.35 p.m.

The SECRETARY Of STATE For DOMINION AFFAIRS (VISCOUNT ADDISON)

My Lords, since we separated just before Easter one of our oldest and most distinguished members, the fourth Marquess of Salisbury, has died, so that we meet to-day under the shadow of a loss which is felt on all sides of your Lordships' House, irrespective of Party considerations. After consultation with the noble Viscounts opposite, Lord Swinton and Lord Samuel, and with the willing consent and co-operation of noble Lords Whose Notices are affected, I have decided to ask the House to postpone the business on the Paper to-morrow until Thursday afternoon and to put down a Motion in my own name for the adjournment of the House as a mark of respect to the memory of the late noble Marquess. This Motion will be taken to-morrow immediately after the introduction of the noble Lord, Lord Rugby, and I have no doubt that many of your Lordships will then wish to pay tribute to the late Lord Salisbury.
