HL Deb 18 June 1946 vol 141 c853
EARL FORTESCUE

My Lords, I beg to ask the following question of which I have given private notice: To ask His Majesty's Government whether any guarantee can be given that 405-line television receivers will not become obsolete at an early date.

THE POSTMASTER-GENERAL (THE EARL OF LISTOWEL)

My Lords, although every effort is being made to develop and introduce a higher definition system of television as quickly as possible, I can assure your Lordships that the public need have no hesitation in acquiring 405-line television receivers for fear of early obsolescence. Adequate public notice will be given of the discontinuance of any 405-line transmission so as to secure a reasonable life for all sets bought up to the time of the notice.
