HL Deb 04 December 1946 vol 144 cc626-7
THE DUKE OF SUTHERLAND

My Lords, I beg to ask the question standing in my name.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government whether in view of the large number of oranges, lemons and grapefruit grown in His Majesty's Dominions overseas, it is not possible to have a more plentiful supply of this type of fruit for sale in this country.]

LORD HENDERSON

My Lords, the only one of His Majesty's Dominions overseas from which significant quantities of citrus fruit are available for export is South Africa, and I can assure the noble Lord that His Majesty's Government intend to import, not only from South Africa but from all other sources of supply, all the oranges, lemons and grapefruit that can be purchased at reasonable prices, and for which the necessary transport is available.

THE DUKE OF SUTHERLAND

I am much obliged.
