HL Deb 18 October 1944 vol 133 c632
LORD BALFOUR OF BURLEIGH

My Lords, I beg to ask the question standing in my name.

[The question was as follows:

To call attention to the fact that French newspapers and periodicals are not available in this country; to ask whether any facilities are being given for their importation; and, if not, whether facilities can be given.]

LORD TEMPLEMORE

My Lords, the French authorities have not yet been able to arrange for French newspapers and periodicals to be available in this country. That is doubtless due to the lack of commercial transport from France to this country and also to the fact that Paris is not yet part of an "interior zone." I also understand that the newsprint position in Paris is precarious. His Majesty's Government would, of course, welcome the distribution in this country of regular supplies of French papers as soon as arrangements can be made.
