HL Deb 02 August 1944 vol 133 cc103-4
LORD STRABOLGI

My Lords, I beg to ask the question standing in my name.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government, whether they have considered the use of surplus or temporarily redundant military camps for families and children evacuated from, or to be evacuated from, danger areas in Southern England.]

THE EARL OF MUNSTER

My Lords, consideration has been given to the use of surplus or temporarily redundant military camps for evacuated persons. In the majority of cases however such camps are still required for military use. Moreover, it is only in exceptional instances that military camps provide the kind of suitable accommodation which it is possible to secure elsewhere for women and children; but where camps are available and suitable they will of course be used. The military authorities are offering substantial assistance to the Ministry of Health by releasing to them a large amount of requisitioned property varying from small houses to large residential premises, and this accommodation is being put to use in connexion with the Government evacuation scheme.
