HL Deb 18 March 1943 vol 126 cc793-4
LORD WINSTER

My Lords, I beg to ask the question standing in my name.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government, how many of the Anti-U-boat Warfare Committee, have been held since it was constituted, when it last met, and who is the Minister responsible to Parliament for the work of this Committee.]

VISCOUNT CRANBORNE

My Lords, the Anti-U-boat Warfare Committee have met regularly once a week since it was constituted. Twenty meetings have so far been held. Admiral Stark, Commander United States Naval Forces in Europe, and Mr. Averill Harriman, Personal Representative of the President, attend the meetings of the Committee. As regards the second part of the question, as my right honourable friend the Prime Minister explained in another place on the 15th December, the existence of this Committee in no way supersedes or replaces the regular and systematic control of the anti-U-boat warfare by the Admiralty.

LORD WINSTER

My Lords, I thank the noble Viscount for his reply. It is not quite clear who answers for the Committee, but I can understand that that varies according to circumstances. There will be an opportunity of debating the matter in the near future, so I shall not press it now.
