HL Deb 14 April 1943 vol 127 c171
THE LORD PRIVY SEAL (VISCOUNT CRANBORNE) (Lord Cecil)

My Lords, before we proceed to the business on the Paper I think it may be for the general convenience of your Lordships if I inform the House that we propose to adjourn for the Easter Recess on the third sitting day in the next series of sittings, when we shall have a Royal Commission, until the first sitting day after the 2nd of May. There is one other point about which I would like to consult your Lordships, and that is with regard to the debate which is taking place to-day on the very important Motions in the names of the noble Viscount, Lord Cecil of Chelwood, and Lord Davies. There is a long list of speakers who have already put down their names, and I think it is certain now that we shall not be able to complete the debate to-day. I would therefore suggest that the wisest plan would be to adjourn at a suitable hour and complete the debate at the next sitting, when it will be the first business on the Paper. I think that ought to be entirely satisfactory. As your Lordships know, there is a Motion on the Paper in the name of the noble Viscount, Lord Rothermere, but we should finish this debate at a pretty early hour and that would give plenty of time to the second Motion. If therefore that is agreeable to your Lordships, I would propose that we should adjourn the debate to-day and continue it at the next sitting.
