HL Deb 11 March 1942 vol 122 c237
LORD ELTON

My Lords, I beg to ask the question standing on the Paper in my name.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government, who is responsible for the obstruction of possible landing places for enemy airborne troops, and whether they are satisfied that this work has been effectively carried out all over the country.]

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (LORD CROIT)

My Lords, in the main the responsibility rests with the Army. The Royal Air Force are responsible only for the obstruction of possible landing grounds in the immediate neighbourhood of Royal Air Force aerodromes and landing grounds where there is a Royal Air Force station commander. Each has its sphere of action clearly defined, and specific instructions have been issued to all concerned. The work is, so far as possible, carried out by the Army and the Royal Air Force authorities themselves, or by contractors working under their direction. His Majesty's Government are satisfied that this work has been carried out effectively wherever it is necessary.
