HL Deb 02 June 1942 vol 123 cc69-70
LORD WEDGWOOD

My Lords, I beg to ask the second question standing in my name.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government whether Major Wintringham is proceeding to India to assist in the formation or training of Home Guards.]

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA AND BURMA (THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE)

My Lords, some ten weeks ago the Commander-in-Chief, India, asked for the services of MY. Wintringham as an instructor in guerrilla warfare. Mr. Wintringham was not at that time able to accept the offer, and the post for which he was required was filled by an officer of exceptional experience whose name was, in fact, suggested by Mr. Wintringham himself. The possibility of finding some other scope in India for Mr. Wintringham's special qualifications is at present the subject of discussion with the Government of India.

LORD WEDGWOOD

There is still a possibility of his going to India?

THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE

It is still under discussion with the Government of India.
