HL Deb 19 November 1941 vol 121 cc71-2
LORD DAVIES

My Lords, I beg to ask the second question standing in my name.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government whether their attention has been called to the views expressed in a recent speech by the Prime Minister of South Africa regarding the status of Palestine and the re-affirmation of the Balfour Declaration; whether they have received any proposals on this subject from the South African Government; and, if so, whether it is intended to submit them to an Imperial War Council to determine the policy to be pursued by the British Commonwealth in regard to the future of Palestine.]

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (LORD MOYNE)

My Lords, His Majesty's Government are aware of the view expressed by General Smuts in his recent broadcast on the occasion of the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. No proposals on the subject have been received from the Union Government, and the last part of the noble Lord's question does not therefore arise.

LORD DAVIES

May I ask the noble Lord, assuming that he received communications from the South African Government in regard to this matter, would it be possible to hold an Imperial Conference to discuss that among other matters?

LORD MOYNE

I am afraid I really could not answer a hypothetical question, and obviously this matter will need to be considered by the Government.

House adjourned.
