My Lords, I rise to ask the question standing on the Paper in my name.

[The question was as follows:

To ask His Majesty's Government whether a list can be given of the various Indian Regiments, units of which have taken part in the campaigns in the Western Desert, East Africa, Iraq and Syria.]

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (LORD CROFT)

My Lords, units of the following Indian Regiments and Services took part in the campaigns in the Western Desert, East Africa, Iraq, Syria and also the movement into Persia:

  • Indian Armoured Corps,
  • Indian Artillery,
  • Sappers and Miners,
  • Indian Corps of Signals,
  • Punjab Regiments,
  • Mahratta Light Infantry,
  • Rajputana Rifles,
  • Jat Regiment,
  • Baluch Regiment,
  • Sikh Regiment,
  • Frontier Force Regiment,
  • Frontier Force Rifles,
  • Royal Garhwal Rifles,
  • Hyderabad Regiment,
  • Gurkha Rifles,
  • Royal Indian Army Service Corps,
  • Indian Medical Services,
  • Indian Army Ordnance Corps.

I am grateful to my noble friend for calling attention to the need for publication of these facts, in view of the great services these Forces have given to the whole of our cause in the Middle East.
