HL Deb 05 September 1940 vol 117 c365
THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR DOMINION AFFAIRS (VISCOUNT CALDECOTE)

My Lords, I regret to have to place on record that since we last met we have lost by death the services of two members of your Lordships' House who had rendered eminent public service, Lord Strickland and Viscount Home of Slamannan. At the same time I regret to record that another member of your Lordships' House, Flying Officer Lord Shuttleworth, has been reported missing for some time, after a fight in the air, and I fear that no hope can now be entertained of his survival. I am sure your Lordships will desire me to express your sympathy with the relatives of these noble Lords in their bereavement.

LORD ADDISON

My Lords, I am sure we all wish to be associated with the expressions used by the Leader of the House. Particularly, perhaps, I might be allowed to associate myself with what he has said regarding Lord Horne, because for some time it was my privilege to be a colleague of the noble Viscount, who rendered, as we all know, distinguished national service.
