HL Deb 18 July 1940 vol 116 cc1065-6
LORD ADDISON

My Lords, I beg to ask the noble Viscount whether he can tell us anything about the business for next week.

VISCOUNT CALDECOTE

My Lords, on Tuesday, July 23, the House will complete the consideration of the Merchant Shipping (Salvage) Hill and the Unemployment Insurance Bill. Lord Marley is asking a question on the scheme for the evacuation of children overseas and is moving for Papers. On Wednesday, July 24, it is proposed to hold the postponed debate on foreign policy on the Motion of the noble Lord, Lord Addison. As your Lordships have expressed a general approval of the suggestion that the debate should be held in Secret Session——

LORD ADDISON

No, no. Perhaps we could discuss that later.

VISCOUNT CALDECOTE

I understood there was a general assent to the suggestion of the noble Viscount, Lord Samuel, that the debate should be held in Secret Session.

LORD ADDISON

No.

VISCOUNT CALDECOTE

As that appeared to be the general desire of your Lordships——

SEVERAL NOBLE LORDS

Hear, hear.

VISCOUNT CALDECOTE

—I thought it was agreed that arrangements should be made accordingly. We may expect to receive the Emergency Powers (Defence) (No. 2) Bill from another place that afternoon, and on Thursday, July 25, it is proposed to take all stages of that Bill, which will be followed by a Royal Commission. The House will meet on Tuesday and Thursday at four o'clock, and I propose to ask my noble and learned friend on the Woolsack if he will make arrangements for your Lordships to meet on Wednesday at three o'clock.
