HL Deb 16 July 1940 vol 116 c959
LORD ADDISON

My Lords, may I ask the Leader of the House a question of which I have given private notice—namely, whether the Government are able to make a statement on negotiations with Japan, particularly with regard to the Burma road?

VISCOUNT CALDECOTE

My Lords, my noble friend Lord Halifax hopes to be in a position to make a statement on this matter in the very near future.

LORD ADDISON

Could the noble Viscount say whether that means tomorrow?

VISCOUNT CALDECOTE

I could not bind myself to say it actually means tomorrow. The noble Lord opposite will realise that the fall of the Japanese Government has added another complication to the position.
