HL Deb 19 July 1937 vol 106 c566

In the Schedule, page 13, line 14, leave out ("(of whom at least one shall be a woman)")

LORD STRATHCONA AND MOUNT ROYAL

My Lords, the provision that the Agricultural Wages Board should consist of equal representation of the two parties, including on each side a woman, follows the recommendation of the Caithness Committee's Report. The National Farmers' Union of Scotland have represented that, since there are not very many women farmers, there is not much point in making it obligatory on the employers to appoint a woman to the Board. The position of the workers' side is different in this respect, since there are numerous women employees. It will be recognised that the Amendment does not imply in the least that no woman may sit on the employers' side of the Board. It will be competent for the employers to elect or nominate a woman, or several women, if they choose to do so.

Moved, That this House doth agree with the Commons in the said Amendment.—(Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
