HL Deb 16 June 1936 vol 101 cc79-80

Amendments reported (according to Order).

Clause 4:

Provisions as to delivery of goods.

4. It shall not be lawful to dispatch any butchers' meat from a shop or to deliver any butchers' meat so dispatched at any time when under the provisions of this Act the shop may not be open for the serving of customers.

VISCOUNT BERTIE OF THAME moved, after the first "meat," to insert "or kosher meat". The noble Viscount said: My Lords, I shall not have to detain you more than a very few moments because this is little more than a drafting Amendment and I understand it will be accepted by those responsible for the Bill. The reason why it is advisable that this Amendment should be made is that as the clause stands a dealer in kosher meat, if he were so disposed, could force his employees to despatch and deliver meat after the time when under the provisions of the Bill his shop may not be open for the serving of customers. That would defeat the object of the Bill, which is to give employees one day's rest in seven.

Amendment moved—

My Lords, on behalf of my noble friend Lord Eltisley, I have to say that he is prepared to accept this Amendment. I understand that the Home Office agree to it.

On Question, Amendment agreed to.

VISCOUNT BERTIE OF THAME

My Lords, my next Amendment is consequential. I beg to move.
