HL Deb 16 November 1933 vol 89 cc437-8

Page 129, line 25, leave out paragraph 8, and insert: ("8. A candidate who is validly nominated for more than one electoral division of a county or for more than one ward of a borough shall, by notice signed, attested, and delivered as aforesaid, withdraw from his candidature in all these electoral divisions or wards, as the case may be, except one, and if be does not so withdraw he shall he deemed to have withdrawn from his candidature in all those electoral divisions or wards, as the case may be")

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

My Lords, this Amendment is concerned with the procedure for preventing frivolous candidatures. It will eliminate the exercise of a difficult and unpleasant duty by the county returning officer or the mayor, who ought not to be required to decide for what area a candidate should stand. The candidate, if he does not withdraw from all electoral areas except one will, under the Amendment, be automatically disqualified from going to election anywhere. I beg to move.

Moved, That this House doth agree with the Commons in the said Amendment.—(The Lord Chancellor.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.
