§ THE EARL OF LUCANMy Lords, I beg to move, That the Order made by the Secretary of State under the Sunday Entertainments Act, 1932, for extending Section one of that Act to the Borough of Maidstone, which was presented on the 3rd day of November, 1932, be approved. Your Lordships will recollect that under the Sunday Entertainments Act, 1932, those areas in which Sunday cinemas had been opened during the year ended October, 1931, were allowed to continue to do as before, but in other areas where it was desired to open cinemas certain conditions had to be fulfilled and application made to Parliament by the Secretary of State for the approval of an Order extending Section 1 of the Act to such areas. The present application from Maidstone is the first application under this Act. The procedure is laid down in the Schedule to the Act. In the case of a borough a notice has to be advertised in the Press, a public meeting of electors called and, if demanded, a poll taken, and then a draft Order submitted by the Secretary of State. In the present case the Secretary of State has satisfied himself that this procedure has been complied with and the Order is submitted for the approval of Parliament. The Motion for its approval was carried in the House of Commons without a Division. I therefore beg to move that this Order be approved in this House also.
§ Moved, That the Order made by the Secretary of State under the Sunday Entertainments Act, 1932, for extending Section one of that Act to the Borough of Maidstone, which was presented on the 3rd day of November, 1932, be approved.—(The Earl of Lucan.)
§ On Question, Motion agreed to.
