HL Deb 29 June 1932 vol 85 cc291-2
THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (VISCOUNT HAILSHAM)

My Lords, the Motion which stands in my name on the Order Paper to give Government business precedence for the remainder of the Session is one which has, unfortunately, to be moved almost always at some period of the Session as it draws near a close, and I think it is fortunate for myself that I have not had to move it earlier, because there are now only eight working days before July 13, when it is hoped that it will be possible for the business of both Houses to come to a conclusion. So far as to-day is concerned, I propose, if your Lordships are good enough to pass the Motion, to leave the Orders of the Day in the order in which they appear on the Order Paper, so that we shall have full time for the discussion in the economy debate. I hope that your Lordships will think it is not unreasonable to ask that for the remainder of the Session Government business, which must be passed, should have precedence.

Moved, That on this day and for the remainder of the Session, Standing Order No. XXI be suspended and Government business have precedence over other Notices and Orders of the Day unless the Government agree to the contrary. — (Viscount Hailsham.)

LORD PONSONBY OF SHULBREDE

My Lords, I quite recognise the necessity of this Motion, and I have no desire to oppose it.

On Question, Motion agreed to, and ordered accordingly.
