THE CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES (THE EARL OF ONSLOW)

My Lords, after consultation with the noble and learned Lord the Leader of the House and with my noble and learned friend opposite, I would like, if your Lordships will allow me to do so, to take this opportunity of informing your Lordships of the progress made since the Report of the Peers' War Memorial Committee was presented to the House on December 18, 1928. Your Lordships will remember that on June 28, 1930, my predecessor, the noble Earl, Lord Donoughmore, in a reply made to a question asked by the noble Lord, Lord Cawley, stated that Mr. Tweed hoped to invite the Committee to view his model for the Memorial during the following month. The visit was duly paid; and in November it was decided by the Committee, with the concurrence of Mr. Tweed, that the memorial group, of which the full-size model was then finished, should be executed in bronze. Further progress has since been made, and it is hoped that the group which is now being cast will be ready some time after your Lordships reassemble.

During the recess the Office of Works, on behalf of the Committee, will undertake the work of preparing the background and floor inside the alcove in the Royal Gallery for the reception of the Memorial, the plans for which have been approved by the Committee with the concurrence of Mr. Tweed. With regard to the names which the Memorial will commemorate, your Lordships will recall that the Committee recommended that they should be inscribed on panels to replace the existing wooden panels on the other side of the alcove. A specimen panel has now been approved, and the Office of Works is arranging for this part of the work to be carried out on behalf of the Committee. It has been suggested that the words:
