HL Deb 28 July 1931 vol 81 cc1232-3

[The references are to Bill No. (57).]

Clause 8, page 5, line 7, leave out subsection (1).

The Commons disagree to the above Amendment for the following Reason:

Because the subsection which the Amendment proposes to leave out is required in order to afford to landholders that security of tenure which it is the object of the Small Landholders Acts to confer on them.

THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY OF THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES (EARL DE LA WARE)

My Lords, I beg to move that this House doth not insist on this Amendment.

Moved, That this House doth not insist upon the said Amendment.—(Earl De La Warr.)

VISCOUNT NOVAR

My Lords, I will follow the example set by the noble Earl in the brevity of his observations. I have given my view on this Amendment on the earlier stages. I think it should be insisted upon by your Lordships, and I will merely ask your Lordships to divide upon it.

VISCOUNT ELIBANK

My Lords, I should like to say that I am not in agreement with my noble friend Lord Novar in this matter. We have considered this Amendment from every point of view, and we put it forward believing it was a proper solution of the subject. If the Amendment is not passed it means really

Resolved in the affirmative: the said Amendment not insisted upon accordingly.
