EARL RUSSELL

My Lords, I beg to move an Amendment in place of the Commons Amendment, to substitute these words:—

  1. (a) a heavy locomitive; or
  2. (b) a heavy locomotive or a light locomotive;
  3. (c)

Moved, That this House doth disagree with the Commons in the said Amendment and propose an Amendment in lieu thereof.—(Earl Russell.)

VISCOUNT BRENTFORD

My Lords, I should like to say a, word on the question of the trailer. I do not know whether the noble Earl is in a position to tell us what he proposes to do in regard to these regulations. I am sure the noble Earl does know that a weight of sixty tons such as is suggested going over a bridge with a locomotive and three trailers is nothing like as hard a strain for the bridge as sixty tons on any one particular vehicle. There must be considerable regard paid to the spread-over as it were of this weight. The noble Earl will not be able to tell us how he intends to frame the regulations. That is a point which must be very carefully considered, otherwise you may prevent the drawing of certain particular articles which can only be taken, as the noble Earl knows, by road transport. Certain things are too big to be taken by some of our railways. I hope that point will be very carefully considered in making the regulations.

Loan PONSONBY OF SHULBREDE

My Lords, I can assure the noble Viscount that the point is being carefully considered. It is very material.

On Question, Motion agreed to: Commons Amendment disagreed to and An Amendment agreed to in lieu thereof accordingly.
