HL Deb 28 January 1930 vol 76 cc343-4
THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

My Lords, with your permission I should like to put one question to the Leader of the House. I think it would be for the convenience of your Lordships if the noble and learned Lord could give us any idea as to when the Unemployment Insurance (No. 2) Bill, which has just gone back to the Commons, is likely to be returned to your Lordships' House.

THE LORD PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL (LORD PARMOOR)

My Lords, I am much obliged to the noble Marquess for asking the question. I can state that the expectation is that the Bill will be back in this House on Thursday evening, and of course, I shall see that a sufficient number are present to receive it. That is merely a formal step. The consideration of it I propose to take on Monday next. That will give adequate time because immediately the Bill is brought back the necessary printed notices can be sent out.

After the Orders of the Day had been disposed of:

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

My Lords, with reference to the conversation which the noble and learned Lord allowed me to have with him just now across the Table, I find that several of my friends would prefer very much that the Unemployment Insurance Bill should be taken on Tuesday next rather than on Monday. Perhaps the noble and learned Lord would allow me to confer with him before the matter is definitely settled.

LORD PARMOOR

My Lords, I will confer with the noble Marquess, but he knows we have been trying, perhaps a little faster than he desires, to save time upon this Bill because of the financial matters involved. I will gladly speak to the noble Marquess on the subject, and we will settle the matter finally after consultation.

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

In that case, we may consider that the matter is not settled till it is mentioned again to-morrow?

LORD PARMOOR

I will mention it to-morrow.
