HL Deb 15 February 1928 vol 70 cc154-6
LORD BANBURY OF SOUTHAM

My Lords, I beg to ask His Majesty's Government the number of outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in the years 1915, 1916, 1917 and in the year 1927.

THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY OF THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES (THE EARL OF STRADBRORE)

My Lords, in reply to the noble Lord's Question I have to state that in the year 1915 the number of outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease was fifty-six; in the year 1916, one; and in the year 1917, none; while in 1927, there were 143, of which sixty-seven occurred between December 10 and the end of the year. These last figures may sound unsatisfactory in comparison with the other three years, but I should like to draw attention to the fact that, serious as they are, this is the least serious year as regards the number of outbreaks that occurred in this country since the year 1921.

House adjourned at five minutes before seven o'clock.
