HL Deb 30 March 1927 vol 66 c839
VISCOUNT HALDANE

My Lords, I wish to ask the noble Marquess who leads the House whether he can make any statement about when this House is to adjourn for the Easter Recess, and when it is to resume.

THE LORD PRIVY SEAL (THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY)

My Lords, I am, of course, most anxious to study the convenience of your Lordships, and having given the matter as much consideration as was in my power, and having consulted my colleagues, I have come to the conclusion that probably if we adjourn on Tuesday, April 12, and reassemble on Thursday, April 28, that would be the best plan. The reasons why those days are selected are these: that the House of Commons is adjourning on Thursday the 14th, and will meet again on Tuesday the 26th, and I do not think it is at all likely there will be any business for your Lordships during the last two days of the sittings of the House of Commons before Easter, or the first two days of the sittings after it reassembles, and therefore your Lordships might legitimately take two more days at each end. Having regard to the uneasy conditions of thing's in China it would not, however, be good for your Lordships to be away too. I think.
