HL Deb 27 July 1927 vol 68 cc941-2

Report stage proceedings resumed (according to Order) on the consideration of an Amendment, moved by Lord Strachie yesterday, to omit from Clause 1 the last three words—"and wild birds."

LORD STRACHIE

My Lords, I do not intend to proceed any further with the Amendment that I have moved to this Bill. I only moved it in the interests of agriculturists and farmers. I thought a difficulty would be created for them by leaving in these words "and wild birds." I have taken the opportunity of consulting the gentleman who, in another place, is responsible for promoting this Bill and, though he told me he quite agreed with my view that it was unnecessary to have "wild birds" in the Bill and that they did not appear in the Bill as originally drafted, he consented to their being put in in order to prevent opposition in another place by a Labour Member. He also informed me that if he had not consented to the insertion of these words it would not have been possible to get the Bill passed this Session. That being the position I do not intend to proceed with my Amendment.

Amendment, by leave, withdrawn.

House adjourned at twenty-five minutes past four o'clock.
