HL Deb 09 December 1927 vol 69 cc768-70
LORD BUCKMASTER

My Lords, before the House adjourns I should like to ask the Government when they propose to take the Report stage of the Landlord and Tenant (No. 2) Bill, and what their proposals are for business during next week?

THE EARL OF PLYMOUTH

My Lords, in the momentary absence of the noble Marquees the Leader of the House perhaps I may reply. The proposal is, and I think it meets with approval, that the Report stage of the Landlord and Tenant Bill should be taken next Friday at eleven o'clock. The Second Reading of the Unemployment Insurance Bill will be taken on Thursday, and the first three days of the week are taken up with the discussion on the Prayer Book Measure.

VISCOUNT HALDANE

On Thursday we shall sit after dinner, I presume?

THE LORD PRIVY SEAL (THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY)

Certainly, if necessary. I gather that my noble friend Lord Plymouth has informed the House that those who are interested in the Landlord and Tenant Bill would prefer to have the Report stage taken on Friday, rather than after dinner on Thursday, and I think probably, considering the great importance of the Report stage of that Bill, it would be better to take it as the first Order on Friday, instead of after dinner on Thursday.

LORD BUCKMASTER

With that I agree, but I should like to have some information as to what the course of business will be. On Thursday we are taking the Second Reading of the Unemployment Insurance Bill, and on Friday the Report stage of the Landlord and Tenant Bill, which exhausts that week. What is proposed to be done in the week after that?

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

I gave an account to the House a few days ago in very great detail, but if the noble Lord will put any specific question I can probably answer it.

LORD BUCKMASTER

I thought there might have been some change in detail owing to the introduction of these Bilk.

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

I think I did say that we thought of taking the Second Reading of several minor Bills on the Friday. Owing to our putting down the Report of the Landlord and Tenant Bill on Friday it may be a little difficult to do that, and then they may be put over to the next week. Possibly if they reach your Lordships' House in good time—though I have very little hope of that—they may then be taken perhaps on the Thursday. That is the only ambiguity, but the moment the House of Commons are good enough to let us know I will at once inform your Lordships.

House adjourned at five minutes before one o'clock.
