HL Deb 05 December 1927 vol 69 c512
EARL GREY

My Lords, I beg to ask the Question standing in Lord Charnwood's name, which is to ask His Majesty's Government whether the Deposited Book referred to in the Prayer Book Measure will be circulated to Peers before they are called upon to vote for or against, a Measure to authorise the use of that Book.

THE MARQUESS OF SALISBURY

My Lords, I think I had an opportunity of addressing your Lordships upon this point a few weeks ago. I indicated then what I understood would be the arrangements which were to be made. I said that I believed there would be a large supply of copies of the Deposited Book in the printed Paper Office, with which your Lordships are familiar. That has been carried out. Two hundred copies of the Book were prepared for the use of noble Lords in that office and I am informed that up to now thirty have been requisitioned by noble Lords. There remain, therefore, 170 copies available, and it appears to me that there is a good supply. I do not know that your Lordships would wish that a copy of the Book should be circulated to every Peer. I do not say that would be an impossible plan; but one would not embark upon a plan of that kind, which involves a certain amount of expense, unless it appeared that noble Lords generally required it. As it is there are these 170 copies waiting for any who wish to have them. I hope that will be sufficient to indicate to your Lordships that the matter has not been neglected.

House adjourned at a quarter before seven o'clock.
