HL Deb 01 July 1925 vol 61 cc950-2
THE LORD BISHOP OF SOUTHWARK

I beg to move to resolve, That in accordance with the Church of England Assembly (Powers) Act, 1919, this House do direct that the Bishopric of Leicester Measure, 1925, be presented to His Majesty for the Royal Assent. I need not detain the House for more than one moment upon this matter which is quite non-controversial, and, as far as I know, has met with no opposition in any of its stages. All who know the facts of the ease agree that it is necessary the diocese should be divided for the spiritual efficiency of the Church. It is too large for any Bishop to know intimately his clergy or his parishes, and it is too widely scattered for the clergy and laity to meet together frequently, while the Cathedral is situated in a distant corner of the diocese. This measure has met with the enthusiastic support of the diocese concerned, with the approval of the Church Assembly, and is recommended to the Houses of Parliament by the Ecclesiastical Committee. I beg to move.

Moved to resolve, That in accordance with the Church of England Assembly (Powers) Act, 1919, this House do direct that the Bishopric of Leicester Measure, 1925, be presented to His Majesty for the Royal Assent.—(The Lord Bishop of Southwark.)

On Question, Motion agreed to.

House adjourned at twenty-five minutes past seven o'clock.
