HL Deb 03 August 1925 vol 62 c685

Order of the Day for the Second Reading read.

THE DUKE OF SUTHERLAND

My Lords, this is a very simple, non-controversial Bill. It arises out of the purchase by the Secretary of State for Air of certain land on Mount Batten Peninsula, near Plymouth, from the Cattewater Harbour Commissioners. The land is the site of the Cattewater Seaplane Station, which is of importance for the aerial defence of the western approaches to the English Channel. There are no other aerodromes in that, part of the country from which land machines could operate. The station was first occupied by the Admiralty in 1917, and was transferred to the Air Ministry in 1918. A large expenditure has been incurred on land and buildings. I beg to move that this Bill be now read a second time.

Moved, That the Bill be now read 2a.— (The Duke of Sutherland.)

On Question, Bill read 2a, and committed for to-morrow.
